Snowman Rig – Paul Dennis

This is the rig I used while over in France, I managed a couple of 20s 2x30s 3x40s and 1×50. Not one fish was lost and all hook holds were nailed into the bottom lip.

It’s a straight forward no nonsense rig, nothing revolutionary, it just does what a rig should do, hook and hold, I have so much confidence in this rig hence why I would like to share it, As sometimes we wait a long time in carp fishing to actually get a bite and the last thing we want is a hook pull etc, I’m sure this will get more fish on the bank for you.

All components for this simple but effective snowman rig are from the Vardis stable

What you need.

Cut a length of your chosen hooklink, around 15” here I’m using 25lb Autumn camo semi stiff downfall.

Strip back about 6 inches of the outer coating.

Tie a loop to fix a boilie stop and also you will see I’ve tied a small knot about 15mm up, this helps to stop the bottom bait from sliding on the hair.

Next attach a 18mm bottom bait and a 12mm popup onto the hair and secure it with a stop.

Slide on a size 4 gripper hook and allow 5mm between the bottom of the hook and the bottom bait.

Simply whip the hooklink around the hook seven turns and back through the hook knotless knot style, and next where the exposed braid meets the coating fix a number 4 shot, should be around at least an inch.

Onto the shot we fix a small amount of tungsten putty , this is to overweight the rig allowing the hook to spin and take hold quickly, penetrating the fish’s mouth.

Next up on the other end tie a simple figure of eight knot, the rig wants to be around 10 inches long.

Slide on a anti tangle sleeve.

The finished rig should look like this.

Here is the rig in the margin, as you can see it looks quite impressive, so give it a go and hopefully it will get you more fish on the bank. One small note you can do this rig on a scaled down version using lighter hooklink and a smaller hook.
